A factory photograph of a Vought-Sikorsky F4U-1 Corsair, shortly later to gain immortality as the Chance Vought F4U Corsair.  This photo, dated July15, 1942, was apparently taken at the factory field in Stratford, Connecticut.  Note the red and white prop tip stripes.  Presumably the blue stripe wasn't applied due to lack of contrast against the black blades.

For those who don't know, Vought-Sikorsky Division of United Aircraft Corporation existed from April 1939 to about July 1942. In 1942, Vought and Sikorsky became separate divisions of UAC and eventually independent companies.  As a result, the F4U can correctly be referred to as the Vought-Sikorsky F4U Corsair, Vought F4U Corsair and Chance Vought F4U Corsair. History will always call it the Chance Vought F4U Corsair, but it makes for interesting trivia, doesn't it?
