CHANCE VOUGHT F4U-1 CORSAIR
Credit: Richard Marmo collection Nothing is known about this photo beyond the fact that it shows a flight of early F4U Corsairs, most likely the F4U-1 variant. The style of national insignia seen on these aircraft existed from May 15, 1942 - June 29, 1943. Officially, that is. Markings changes took awhile to trickle down, never mind the fact that combat requirements took precidence over changing the insignia to match current practice. The only definitive statement I can make is that this photo was taken sometime after May 15, 1942, when the red meatball was removed from the star-in-circle. Anything beyond that is simply a wild guess.
