The XC-142A was the Vought-Ryan-Hiller answer to a VTOL competition. After Chance Vought was bought by Ling-Temco, which resulted in Chance Vought changing its name to LTV (Ling-Temco-Vought) Aerospace, the aircraft became the LTV XC-142A.  A four-engined   tilt-wing design, with a small horizontal rotor mounted behind the tail, five prototypes were built. Only one remains in existance today, being preserved at the Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio.
